Duration has Nothing to Do with Intensity

Duration has Nothing to Do with Intensity

I used to think working for 15 hours a day meant I was applying more intensity to my work and therefore expected better results from my efforts.

But when I really examined where and how I spent each hour, I realized there was a lot of unproductive time mixed in. And when I say a lot, I mean it shocked me, once I drilled down each 15-minute block of my day.

My years of experience, my months of exercise, my weeks of practice, my hours of study, my minutes of writing.

All of these things can be done with different levels of intensity and focus.

I’ve discovered I can gain more experience in a shorter period of time by applying focused intensity to my business pursuits.

You can accomplish this through intelligent hustle. Being really busy doesn’t count. Working 15 hours being really busy may make you feel like you are accomplishing a lot until you log your focused productive vs. unfocused time.

My busyness came more from my lack of organization and systems for my business. This issue took me a long time to fully own and take actionable steps every day to curb my tendency to get distracted and disorganized with my productive time.

Operating more efficiently is a form of intensity you can apply to your business. Another form of intensity is being purposeful to learn and then apply what you learn. This allows you to experience higher levels of trial and error compared to your counterparts, so you learn and grow on a faster level.

It’s easier to picture higher intensity in terms of exercise because you are either going hard or being conservative. The advantage of going hard is that you can get the same or even better results in less time by ramping up your intensity. Intelligent hustle also applies here as well, because you don’t want to go so hard that you cause an injury that takes you out of the game, and you want to make sure you are doing workouts that will make you stronger and less injury-prone.

I can casually practice Spanish lessons every day for a month in between responding to Facebook posts and having the TV on, or I can immerse myself for 30 minutes each day with no distractions and see 10x the results in the same period of time.

Time investment does not run parallel to improvement.

More practice will lead to improvement, but results can be amplified through intensity of practice.

You want to get more accomplished in less time?
Apply more intensity to your pursuits.

Exit the Road of Regret

Exit the Road of Regret

After the last real estate crash, I had to rebuild financially. But slowly, I built my real estate business up to a level where it was thriving. I could see the next 10 years. I was in a good spot. I could have stayed on that road, hit cruise control, and had a pretty good ride. But… something kept nagging at me. Like I was destined for something else, something bigger.

My friend Ryan Fletcher, who has a similar story, described his like this…

“…Instead of staying on cruise control, I saw a dirt road that looked exciting, that wound back and forth up the side of a mountain. Hairpin turns? Yeah, those look treacherous. A pitch so steep that a goat can barely traverse it? Well, who doesn’t love a challenge? The problem was, I was driving a sports car, not exactly built for off-road adventure racing. Who trades in a Lamborghini for a desert Baja truck? A person, I guess, who commits to living life regret-free. The Path of Least Resistance vs. The Path of Great Resistance. Over the next 3 years, I’d sink everything I had into the build of that Baja 1000 capable vehicle. This led many to question me. To doubt me. To not understand me. In each occurrence, I don’t care. Those who don’t get it, don’t have the same drum beating inside of them as I have beating inside of me. My drum thumps. It’s a heartbeat in my throat. It’s energy in my brain. It’s the conviction in my beliefs.”

Ryan’s comments really resonated with me.

It’s easy to say that taking that dirt road is stupid when you are already cruising down the comfortable highway. But the danger in not taking that exciting dirt road is regret.

“When something inside you is calling you to be more, it’s time to get uncomfortable.”

Like Ryan, there is a drum that is beating inside of me to become more. If I ignore it, the drum just gets louder until I can’t hear anything else.

The most frustrating place is often when you have drum beating inside of you, but you can’t find your exciting dirt road.

I’ve been there many times.

So much so that when an exciting dirt road came along that spoke to me, I turned off cruise control, pulled off the highway, and made a left on to that exciting and treacherous dirt road.

It didn’t take long for me to see this was the road I’ve been waiting for, but if I had not stopped to check it out, I might have never found it. Had I not taken a chance on seeing where it might lead, I may have invited regret to be a passenger on my ride.

“Don’t invite regret to be a passenger in your life.”

If you have a drum beating inside of you, keep an eye out for your exciting dirt road; it might just be coming on up on your left.

Are You The Cattle or The Cowboy?

Are You The Cattle or The Cowboy?

I ran into an old friend recently who I haven’t seen in years. He told me that he has been following me on Facebook and that he was blown away by all the things he sees Amanda and me doing.

He asked about ImpactClub and Sugar Sisters (our daughters’ business), our recent trips to Europe, and Thailand, and he wanted to know more about the new venture he saw us working on called “The Business of Us.”

He asked me how we do it all.

And I reminded him that I’ve been a bit of a dreamer and that I simply haven’t stopped chasing my dreams.

And I was dead serious about it.

Parents tell their kids to chase their dreams, but the message somehow turns to chase job security when they become a young adult.

It’s common in our society to encourage people to chase their dreams, but it’s even more common for society to scare you out of such pursuits.

Our friends and family want us to stay safe, which is endearing, but it’s also how many of us get stuck in life. You end up feeling more like cattle than the cowboy.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore because I make resolutions constantly. I’m always working on our next trip, our next venture, our next fitness challenge, our next charity event.

Chasing your dreams doesn’t have to mean quitting your day job and ignoring all your responsibilities so you can live a life of adventure.

But if that is how people view it, then it’s no wonder why they stop chasing their dreams.

All my dreams that I’ve chased down so far have come from long hard fought journeys.

Was it worth it? Hell yeah! It’s why I’m all-in about chasing dreams. It’s not just something to say to inspire others, it’s a way of life.

Happy Chasing,

Raising The Stakes

Raising The Stakes

We hear this term “raising the stakes” most often with gambling because you have to choose when to “raise” your bet, the more you bet, the higher your “stakes.”

I’m not a fan of gambling. Mostly because I don’t like betting on things when I feel I have little control of the outcome. Some card games have some strategy for sure, but you will never see me put money down on a roulette table or into a slot machine.

However, I am a fan of “raising the stakes” in my life.

I have little reservations about going ALL-IN on parts of my life.

Twenty years ago, I decided to go all-in on my marriage.

I went all-in on my real estate business too. And once more after my girls were born with my decision to travel overseas with them every year.

More recently, I’ve gone all-in once again, with my new venture with Amanda. As we document our journey discovering and living by what we call “Sweet Life Principles,” hence we’ve been writing, reading, learning, and exercising every day in the pursuit of that goal.

I’m not a fan of coasting. Doing something half-ass. At least not with what is most important to me. If I’m not all-in, then I don’t want to play the game.

Something I’ve been reminded of recently is when we are reluctant to go all-in on something important, either out of fear, uncertainty, etc., we can rig the game in our favor, by simply “raising the stakes.”

Have you ever thought about why having an accountability partner causes humans to show up and perform better?

It raises the stakes because your lack-luster performance is no longer impacting just you. Not fully showing up has negative consequences on others. Which, if left unchecked, says something not at all pleasing about your character and your reputation.

I find even when I don’t have accountability partner, but I surround myself with others who are pushing harder than most at their work, or their health, or at improving their relationships, it helps me up my own game because it allows me to see how I can up my game and raise my stakes so I can play on a higher level.

If we are half-assing our way through something, it may be time to raise the stakes or play a different game.

If you hate your job because it feels like you are just chasing a paycheck instead of producing meaningful work, then maybe you are playing the wrong game, or you need to double down on meaningful work outside your day job.

Either way, finding ways to raise the stakes in your life helps you go all-in, play at a higher level, and improve faster.

Progress is Contagious

Progress is Contagious

I am learning Spanish right now. Which is no small feat; I’ve been practicing English for over 40 years and still struggle with it.

Amanda is the linguist of the family, as she seems to have a knack for picking up languages faster than most. Plus, she is fantastic with accents, so in addition to learning languages quickly, she can quickly sound like a native wherever we travel.

I, on the other hand, have zero talent in linguistics. Amanda has found great humor in seeing me try to speak English over the years because I tend to mix up my words frequently.

You can see why it’s tempting to have Amanda do all the talking when we are ordering food, buying bus tickets, and checking into hotels in foreign countries. But I’ve been making so much progress in my health and work recently that I want to use that momentum to expand progress to other parts of my life.

Amanda and I travel to Mexico and Spain quite a bit; we have trips planned to go to both countries in the next year. Once these trips were booked, I heard Amanda immediately begin practicing her Spanish through a couple of apps on her phone.

Not wanting to be a linguistical dud my whole life, I decided to fire up those same language learning apps on my phone.

The first thing I’ve noticed in this new language journey is how much time Amanda puts into the learning process. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day is the average, but I’ve seen her go closer to an hour in total time throughout her day a few times.

So I’ve adopted this daily routine and do an average of 20-30 minutes a day learning Spanish. I’m about 4 weeks in this process as I write this.

Here are my six takeaways so far…

1. Progress is addictive.
It doesn’t matter if it involves work, health, relationships, or personal stuff. When I experience progress, I want more of it. I’m lightyears ahead of my starting point. Progress is slow, but it’s measurable, which is inspiring me to keep the streak going.

2. Progress is contagious.
When we see others experience progress, we crave it ourselves. When others see our progress, it can inspire them to take their own action. Amanda inspired me when I witnessed how she was learning and the gains she was making from just using an app on her phone. The kids have seen me take up this challenge and have joined in too. It’s not uncommon to see all 4 of us on the couch practicing Spanish at 7:45 pm.

3. Progress is simple.
To improve, to make measurable gains, it simply takes daily action. It doesn’t matter what it is; nothing beats daily practice. A big part of the reason Amanda is good at learning languages is that she puts time into learning every day. She doesn’t just magically learn new phrases; she repeats them many times until she gets them nailed.

4. Progress is not easy.
Easy is watching Netflix instead of taking 15 minutes to practice something you want to get better at. Fifteen minutes of practice is not hard, but there are days when I just don’t care, I’m exhausted and just want to veg and rest my mind. To overcome this, I often do my Spanish lessons sprawled out on the couch, so I am relaxing while I do it.

5. Progress is a game you can win.
Intentional focused energy to get better every day is a simple recipe for progress. To make it easier, you can gamify the process. One of the language learning apps we use is called Duolingo. This app has attempted to gamify the learning process by putting you in a group of 50 or so other people at a similar learning state, and then rank you based on how many lessons you complete during the week. At first, I didn’t pay any attention to this. But now that I’m faster at completing lessons, I watch the ranking every day, and it regularly pushes me to complete many more lessons each week. But you don’t need an app to gamify progress, you could get a friend or loved one to be your accountability partner, make a chart/game map and mark your progress each day you practice.

I’ve tried to learn Spanish before and always fell flat. I now realize the biggest challenge is just finding a way to practice for 15 minutes every day. I’m one month into this process and I can clearly see progress, but I can also see that is not a short-term journey. Which brings me to my final takeaway…

6. Progress takes patience.
It’s so easy to say, “I’m never going to get this. It’s too hard. I suck.” And I’ve said those things for decades. I think part of the difference now is that I hear my kids saying the same thing, which doesn’t sit well with me. So, I’m going to show them that even Dad, who is horrible at learning languages, can learn to speak Spanish, no matter how long it takes.
