Holding Out For A Hero

Holding Out For A Hero

Do you remember that song from Bonnie Tyler, called “Holding out for a hero”?
Here is a link to refresh your memory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWcASV2sey0

It’s been in a few movies like Footloose, Shrek 2. I don’t when or how I came back across this song, but it recently found its way on to my workout playlist.

I’m not sure if I just have a thing for cheesy rock songs from the 80’s but this silly song has become my favorite when I really need to kick it up a notch in my workout.

Part of my morning routine is to stretch and then do 100 burpees as fast as I can. I listen to soothing music when I stretch, and turn on my workout playlist while I do some warm-up exercises before the burpees.

But for the last couple of weeks, before I start the timer for my burpees, I skip the music up to “Holding out for a hero.” The song is 5:47 minutes long, which corresponds with how long it takes me to do 100 burpees on a good day. So I’m also pushing to finish before the end of the song.

I don’t really know why I’m sharing this with you. This really isn’t a manly rock song after all. I’m certainly not embarrassed that I like this song.

But I do believe we are all holding out for hero, and that hero is us.

We are judged by our actions, and every day we are forced to make decisions where one path is harder, but much more heroic, and the other path is easier, and less heroic.

It’s extremely challenging to choose the heroic path consistently. But you can make the choice easier by playing your heroic theme song before deciding.

When my body wants to stop and take a break when I’m doing those dreaded burpees, this song helps me make the more heroic decision.

I challenge you to find your heroic theme song that inspires you to push harder, to pick the heroic path, and have it ready to play when you feel yourself slipping towards those less-than-heroic decisions.

We are all holding out for a hero, and that hero is you.

Are You The Cattle or The Cowboy?

Are You The Cattle or The Cowboy?

I ran into an old friend recently who I haven’t seen in years. He told me that he has been following me on Facebook and that he was blown away by all the things he sees Amanda and me doing.

He asked about ImpactClub and Sugar Sisters (our daughters’ business), our recent trips to Europe, and Thailand, and he wanted to know more about the new venture he saw us working on called “The Business of Us.”

He asked me how we do it all.

And I reminded him that I’ve been a bit of a dreamer and that I simply haven’t stopped chasing my dreams.

And I was dead serious about it.

Parents tell their kids to chase their dreams, but the message somehow turns to chase job security when they become a young adult.

It’s common in our society to encourage people to chase their dreams, but it’s even more common for society to scare you out of such pursuits.

Our friends and family want us to stay safe, which is endearing, but it’s also how many of us get stuck in life. You end up feeling more like cattle than the cowboy.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore because I make resolutions constantly. I’m always working on our next trip, our next venture, our next fitness challenge, our next charity event.

Chasing your dreams doesn’t have to mean quitting your day job and ignoring all your responsibilities so you can live a life of adventure.

But if that is how people view it, then it’s no wonder why they stop chasing their dreams.

All my dreams that I’ve chased down so far have come from long hard fought journeys.

Was it worth it? Hell yeah! It’s why I’m all-in about chasing dreams. It’s not just something to say to inspire others, it’s a way of life.

Happy Chasing,

Mastering the Mind & Emotions

Mastering the Mind & Emotions

When it comes to the mind and emotions, I see this area as far more difficult to gain mastery over than the physical body.

It’s easy to get caught up in the mind and emotional because of it. The words “caught up” make me think of water, getting swept away.

One of the best things I can do for myself is just be aware that this is happening. Have the presence of mind to step back and look at things more objectively.

If I remember to do this, there are cases when I realize that there’s no need to get caught up in the current, and that actually I just need to put my feet down and stand up.

Mastering the mind and emotions is a way to avoid unnecessary stress (on both myself and those around me) and keep the presence of mind to be who I want to be, no matter the situation.

When I’m ruled by my emotions and lose that presence of mind, it’s usually because there’s some sort of fear at the root of it. Fear is what drives the emotions.

Note: I make a big distinction between getting emotional about a cause versus being passionate about a cause.

• A negative emotional state equates to something having a detrimental effect on our personal well-being.
• Being passionate about a cause means we take action outside of ourselves to further an issue that we care about.

There’s a great quote by Louisa May Alcott: “I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.” By practicing mastery of the mind and emotions, we negate any cause for fear.

For me, meditation plays a huge part in this because much of it is about recognizing the thoughts that come and go as just that: thoughts. They are the clouds that pass through occasionally, but the blue sky behind them is always there.

Remembering that (and putting it to good use when feeling consumed by fear) is my goal. And daily meditation is one part of “learning how to sail my ship.”

Raising The Stakes

Raising The Stakes

We hear this term “raising the stakes” most often with gambling because you have to choose when to “raise” your bet, the more you bet, the higher your “stakes.”

I’m not a fan of gambling. Mostly because I don’t like betting on things when I feel I have little control of the outcome. Some card games have some strategy for sure, but you will never see me put money down on a roulette table or into a slot machine.

However, I am a fan of “raising the stakes” in my life.

I have little reservations about going ALL-IN on parts of my life.

Twenty years ago, I decided to go all-in on my marriage.

I went all-in on my real estate business too. And once more after my girls were born with my decision to travel overseas with them every year.

More recently, I’ve gone all-in once again, with my new venture with Amanda. As we document our journey discovering and living by what we call “Sweet Life Principles,” hence we’ve been writing, reading, learning, and exercising every day in the pursuit of that goal.

I’m not a fan of coasting. Doing something half-ass. At least not with what is most important to me. If I’m not all-in, then I don’t want to play the game.

Something I’ve been reminded of recently is when we are reluctant to go all-in on something important, either out of fear, uncertainty, etc., we can rig the game in our favor, by simply “raising the stakes.”

Have you ever thought about why having an accountability partner causes humans to show up and perform better?

It raises the stakes because your lack-luster performance is no longer impacting just you. Not fully showing up has negative consequences on others. Which, if left unchecked, says something not at all pleasing about your character and your reputation.

I find even when I don’t have accountability partner, but I surround myself with others who are pushing harder than most at their work, or their health, or at improving their relationships, it helps me up my own game because it allows me to see how I can up my game and raise my stakes so I can play on a higher level.

If we are half-assing our way through something, it may be time to raise the stakes or play a different game.

If you hate your job because it feels like you are just chasing a paycheck instead of producing meaningful work, then maybe you are playing the wrong game, or you need to double down on meaningful work outside your day job.

Either way, finding ways to raise the stakes in your life helps you go all-in, play at a higher level, and improve faster.

Progress is Contagious

Progress is Contagious

I am learning Spanish right now. Which is no small feat; I’ve been practicing English for over 40 years and still struggle with it.

Amanda is the linguist of the family, as she seems to have a knack for picking up languages faster than most. Plus, she is fantastic with accents, so in addition to learning languages quickly, she can quickly sound like a native wherever we travel.

I, on the other hand, have zero talent in linguistics. Amanda has found great humor in seeing me try to speak English over the years because I tend to mix up my words frequently.

You can see why it’s tempting to have Amanda do all the talking when we are ordering food, buying bus tickets, and checking into hotels in foreign countries. But I’ve been making so much progress in my health and work recently that I want to use that momentum to expand progress to other parts of my life.

Amanda and I travel to Mexico and Spain quite a bit; we have trips planned to go to both countries in the next year. Once these trips were booked, I heard Amanda immediately begin practicing her Spanish through a couple of apps on her phone.

Not wanting to be a linguistical dud my whole life, I decided to fire up those same language learning apps on my phone.

The first thing I’ve noticed in this new language journey is how much time Amanda puts into the learning process. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day is the average, but I’ve seen her go closer to an hour in total time throughout her day a few times.

So I’ve adopted this daily routine and do an average of 20-30 minutes a day learning Spanish. I’m about 4 weeks in this process as I write this.

Here are my six takeaways so far…

1. Progress is addictive.
It doesn’t matter if it involves work, health, relationships, or personal stuff. When I experience progress, I want more of it. I’m lightyears ahead of my starting point. Progress is slow, but it’s measurable, which is inspiring me to keep the streak going.

2. Progress is contagious.
When we see others experience progress, we crave it ourselves. When others see our progress, it can inspire them to take their own action. Amanda inspired me when I witnessed how she was learning and the gains she was making from just using an app on her phone. The kids have seen me take up this challenge and have joined in too. It’s not uncommon to see all 4 of us on the couch practicing Spanish at 7:45 pm.

3. Progress is simple.
To improve, to make measurable gains, it simply takes daily action. It doesn’t matter what it is; nothing beats daily practice. A big part of the reason Amanda is good at learning languages is that she puts time into learning every day. She doesn’t just magically learn new phrases; she repeats them many times until she gets them nailed.

4. Progress is not easy.
Easy is watching Netflix instead of taking 15 minutes to practice something you want to get better at. Fifteen minutes of practice is not hard, but there are days when I just don’t care, I’m exhausted and just want to veg and rest my mind. To overcome this, I often do my Spanish lessons sprawled out on the couch, so I am relaxing while I do it.

5. Progress is a game you can win.
Intentional focused energy to get better every day is a simple recipe for progress. To make it easier, you can gamify the process. One of the language learning apps we use is called Duolingo. This app has attempted to gamify the learning process by putting you in a group of 50 or so other people at a similar learning state, and then rank you based on how many lessons you complete during the week. At first, I didn’t pay any attention to this. But now that I’m faster at completing lessons, I watch the ranking every day, and it regularly pushes me to complete many more lessons each week. But you don’t need an app to gamify progress, you could get a friend or loved one to be your accountability partner, make a chart/game map and mark your progress each day you practice.

I’ve tried to learn Spanish before and always fell flat. I now realize the biggest challenge is just finding a way to practice for 15 minutes every day. I’m one month into this process and I can clearly see progress, but I can also see that is not a short-term journey. Which brings me to my final takeaway…

6. Progress takes patience.
It’s so easy to say, “I’m never going to get this. It’s too hard. I suck.” And I’ve said those things for decades. I think part of the difference now is that I hear my kids saying the same thing, which doesn’t sit well with me. So, I’m going to show them that even Dad, who is horrible at learning languages, can learn to speak Spanish, no matter how long it takes.

How to Change Your Life

How to Change Your Life

In terms of my personal health and fitness, I’ve always been a two-steps-forward/one-step-back kind of girl. I move slow and steady, but generally in the right direction.

That is… until now.

This year has been a game-changer. I am in high gear.

We started by training for and completing a half-marathon, then began the GRIT challenges we’ve been posting about. What we’re doing now takes less time, but is more effective, than any other diet or exercise I’ve tried.

I feel like I’ve been able to take longer strides on those two steps forward and shorten the single steps back into baby steps.

The workouts are hard. No joke, but often as quick as 15 minutes.

It all comes down to a body in motion versus a body at rest.

One reason why these challenges are so effective is that they demand more than you think you are capable of. Putting forth more effort than you thought you could builds momentum to keep that effort going.

I’m really appreciative (though it would have been hard to get me to admit it along the way) that there was no option to take a day off. If you fail to do your workout and post in the group, you are booted entirely and have to wait for next month’s 28-day challenge to begin again. So you have to fully commit. There are no workout-cheat-days. That keeps the momentum going.

After completing my second GRIT challenge, we were asked to reflect on our results. Here are some of mine.

Mind: I feel more present, relaxed, calm, confident, at peace, capable, and optimistic. I enjoy every day. I’m not afraid of asking myself hard questions and digging deep to find the answers. I’ve always been a writer, but hadn’t written on the topics that we touch upon here. It’s tapped into gratitude. I feel constant gratitude.

Body: We hauled our hand-me-down fake Christmas tree up from the shed. It comes in three sections that stack together. In the past Mike has carried the two bigger sections of it and I’ve just carried the top part because the thing is so darn heavy. But on Friday I picked up the middle section of it and wondered why I’d ever thought it was heavy. Then I realized that it’s exactly the same weight as it was last year; I just happen to be a heck of a lot stronger now. And as far as vanity is concerned, I’ve lost two inches from my thighs, two from my hips, and one inch at my stomach.

Business: Physical strength and getting a workout done early in the morning effects nearly everything that follows throughout the day. I’m more confident and capable, which bleeds into every aspect of my work. I’ve unearthed a manuscript that I’ve been sitting on for two years and I have at least two releases planned for 2020. I feel like I’ve made huge strides in moving forward.

Mike has started posting our workout videos on Facebook. Previously we’ve only posted them in the private GRIT group. The people I’ve met through this have inspired me and truly changed me for the better. Maybe we can pass that light along to someone else.
